Cefn Fforest Miners’ Institute is proud to provide a home for many local community groups. On Thursday’s local forces veterans use our hall for a sociual gathering.
A vital lifeline of mutual support and camaraderie is thriving every week in the heart of Cefn Fforest. Each Thursday, a dedicated group of Armed Forces veterans—representing the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, come together to share stories, offer mutual support, and enjoy the unique bond that only those who served can truly understand.
With members ranging in age from 38 to 82, the weekly meetup bridges generations of service, proving that no matter how much time has passed, the military family remains as strong as ever.
The meetings are held in a fittingly historic location: the Cefn Fforest Miners’ Institute. Originally built as a hub for community solidarity, the landmark building is currently undergoing an inspiring renovation. Now operating as a registered charity, the Institute is reclaiming its place as a cornerstone of local life, providing a welcoming, warm, and meaningful backdrop for the veterans’ weekly gatherings. The ‘Stute’ has been very accommodating and helpful in allowing the Veterans to meet on the premises.
New members from all branches of the services are always welcome. Whether you are looking for a friendly chat with people who speak your language, a bit of shared military humor, or just a good cup of tea, the doors are wide open every Thursday. Come along, reconnect, and find your community right here in Cefn Fforest.
We meet at 19:00 every Thursday.
We have had several notable trips and nights out, recently we went to Normandy to pay our respects to the fallen. We have a trip booked to Ypres in 2027 Sgt Major Kelvin Brinkworth, and Major Richard ‘Dicky’ Brinkworth.
The veterans recently met with Blackwood town Mayor, George Etheridge. George presented the veterans with lapel badges celebrating 100 years of Blackwood Cenotaph. George was joined by Blackwood’s Independent Councilor Kevin Etheridge OBE.
Kevin spoke to some of his Blackwood constituents and gave advice on possible funding opportunities for the Veterans and the Stute.
