Cefn Fforest Miners’ Institute celebrates receiving £21k funding to help restore one-hundred-year-old institute building
South Wales charity, Cefn Fforest Miners’ Welfare Hall (CIO) is celebrating after being awarded £21,000 from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Community Empowerment Fund, towards renovation of the former Miners’ Institute in Cefn Fforest.
The money will be used towards the replacement of doors and widows and new heaters in the building.
Since 2017 volunteers have been doing their best to restore the building with limited resources but have recently been successful with a number of grants and are starting to make progress towards re-opening the building and a community resource for the village.
Through Caerphilly Council’s Community Empowerment Fund, the Council is supporting communities to become strong and resilient, and they recognise that one of the county borough’s greatest assets is the thriving network of local community groups and organisations across the area.

Key to this will be the involvement of local Ward Members as one of the key contact points in local communities, who will work with and support local community groups to develop project ideas that meet identified needs on a ward basis.
Shane Williams, Councillor for Cefn Fforest, stated. “The Stute is such an important community project and we are delighted to help support it’s refurbishment with our community fund”
Ian Thomas, Treasurer of Cefn Fforest Miners Welfare Hall, stated “it has been an uphill struggle to get this project off the ground, but we are finally stating to make progress and Councillor Shane Williams has been a massive help to us securing this funding, which is gong to go a long way towards us re-opening the building.”
